The Myth of Self Sacrifice

We have been told all of our lives that any level of sacrifice is honorable, and leaders always portray people that sacrifice their lives for others as being the ultimate heroes. Many people have bought into this programming for several reasons. For most of us, our genetic propensity along with social training influences us to be decent and even protective of other humans, including strangers, but sacrificing one’s life comes almost entirely from self/social programming. It has been in our mythos and stories probably starting back since prehistoric times. People in power or positions of authority are the most effective at pushing the myth.

I have been meaning to blog about this topic for a long time now, so it’s good that I get this off my chest. The History Channel isn’t a bad channel, by any means, as far as TV channels go. It often has some very interesting, educational programs on it. However, I do have a beef with it.
Letter From KittenKat

I sent a message to KittenKat yesterday, asking her to come check out this site. I thought nothing of it, as it’s pretty normal to beg friends from the many social networking sites to come visit whatever site you’re working on within the interwebs.
Within minutes, I got a reply. When I opened the message, I was stunned to see like 4 (!) paragraphs. I immediately thought that maybe she didn’t take it so well, and considering that one of the first lines was “I’m not an atheist”, I thought that maybe it was a going to be an angry message.
